width, height and viewBox

An SVG's viewBox defines its internal coordinate system; width and height define how big it is drawn. Resizing correctly means changing the second and keeping the first:

<svg viewBox="0 0 24 24" width="96" height="96">…</svg>

This icon is drawn on a 24-unit grid and displayed at 96 × 96 px, four times its native size, with no loss of sharpness.

Questions

Does resizing an SVG reduce quality?

No. SVG is vector, so changing width and height only changes the size it is displayed at. The shapes are redrawn sharply at any size.

Why does my resized SVG look cropped elsewhere?

Changing width and height without a viewBox crops the drawing instead of scaling it. This tool adds a viewBox from the original size when one is missing, so the artwork scales.

What does "responsive" do?

It removes the fixed width and height attributes and keeps the viewBox, so the SVG fills whatever size you give it in CSS while keeping its proportions.

How do I change the artboard size instead of scaling?

Open the file in the Vectopea editor and set the artboard width and height in the Properties panel. The artwork stays the same size and the canvas around it changes. To trim empty space automatically, use Crop SVG.
