Why SVGs have extra whitespace

  • The file was exported with the whole artboard rather than the selection.
  • Icons from a set share a fixed grid (such as 24 × 24) with built-in padding.
  • Shapes were deleted or moved, leaving the old canvas size behind.

Before you crop an icon set

Icon sets keep equal padding on purpose so every icon aligns on the same grid. Crop one-off logos and illustrations, not individual icons from a set. To change the displayed size instead, use Resize SVG. For manual layout, use the online SVG editor.

Questions

How do I remove the whitespace around an SVG?

Drop the SVG above. The tool measures the visible shapes and shrinks the viewBox to fit them. Add padding if you want a margin, then download the cropped file.

Does cropping delete parts of my drawing?

No. Only the viewBox changes, which is the visible window onto the drawing. Every shape stays in the file, and anything outside the new viewBox is simply not shown.

Why are thick strokes clipped at the edges?

Browsers measure shape geometry without stroke width. Increase the padding by about half the stroke width to include the full outline.

Can I crop to a custom area?

Open the file in the Vectopea editor, where you can set the artboard size numerically and move the artwork inside it.
